Arrival in Dubrovnik and an Unexpectedly Fantastic Meal

We took a direct flight from Prague to Dubrovnik via Czech Airlines that had us on the ground in Croatia by 3:00 PM.  At the time of our booking confirmation for lodging we were offered the option of direct transport via private vehicle from the airport, which we decided to take advantage of.  From what I had read, many tourists take taxi or ride-sharing apps from the airport to arrive in Old Town Dubrovnik, so booking ahead was a nice way to avoid arranging this as we stepped off the plane.  There is also an airport shuttle bus that takes travelers to and from the airport to several stops outside of the walled city.  We took advantage of this service as we were departing Dubrovnik and had a good experience as well.

Prior to planning this trip, we were torn between our two options of where to stay while in Dubrovnik.  One option is to stay outside the walled Old Town, as this gives the travelers a reprieve from the crowds and hustle and bustle of the main event.  Also, views of the city are amazing from many of the locations along the roads leading down to Dubrovnik’s Old Town, and prices are better as well.  The disadvantage is that the walk can be long and exhausting, with many uphill stairs between Old Town and most of the AirBNB and hotel options.  Instead, we opted to stay within the walls and absolutely loved it.  We stumbled across a quaint studio apartment rental with a private balcony and magnificent city views that we quickly booked for our trip.  The Rooms Vlaho was situated right at the top of the Jesuit Stairs and in an incredible location in the heart of Old Town.  Aside from the location, the customer service was great, as the management team walked us from the rental office to our unit, offered a cleaning service once during our stay, and allowed us to store our luggage with them following check-out on our final day in Dubrovnik.  For the other Game of Thrones fans out there (I’ll try my best to keep these references to a minimum for those who aren’t), the Jesuit Stairs are those in front of the Sept of Baelor, where Cersei Lannister begins her famous “Walk of Shame”.  When we learned this was the location of the rental, we knew there was no other option for us.  There were ample restaurants nearby and plenty of tourists walking the steps shouting “Shame, Shame!”  But quite truthfully, any location within the walls would be a good one, as you can easily walk from one side to the other in 15 minutes or so.  Try to pack light, though, as many steps and streets made of stone no matter where you stay make lugging around bags less than enjoyable.

The weather in Dubrovnik was pretty terrible upon our arrival, and the forecast for the week definitely was not what we were expecting.  We had been looking forward to sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-70s.  Instead, it looked like we would be seeing a lot of rain and clouds and would barely be able to break out our shorts and sandals.  Many people that we spoke with said they hadn’t seen this much rain in quite some time, and this weather was even chillier than most of the winter months!

So rather than exploring too much in the pouring rain, we decided to just walk down the stairs from our apartment rental to the restaurant that operated out of the first floor of the building.  Boy, were we happy with this decision!  I can honestly say that the meal that we had at Kopun was not only the pinnacle of our dining experiences in Croatia but also the best of our entire two week journey and any other feast of recent memory.  We enjoyed a bottle of fruity Croatian white wine while we dined outdoors under a large awning and next to heating lamps.  Many restaurants in Dubrovnik also provide blankets for chilly evenings, which was a very nice touch.  Travelers beware:  food in Dubrovnik is expensive!  But Kopun was rather reasonably priced for the excellence of the meal and service.  I ordered a pasta calamari, which was excellent, but Emily was the real winner for the night.  She tried the traditional Capon, an entree of castrated rooster that truly tasted like it was described, a Croatian delicacy.  We each ordered lovely desserts as well, a perfect ending to a wonderful dining experience.  If you travel to Dubrovnik, do yourself a favor and make a reservation at Kopun for a wonderful Croatian meal.
